married Boenettie Durant. Note: Mystery shrouds the marriage of Charlotte Folsom and Benjamin Hampton, and the parentage of their daughter, Lucinda. Despite much research, documentation for those particular events has not been found. What we do have is Lucinda's own story, told to her granddaughter, Bobbe (my cousin, who is still living), and the records of a Census of Blue Co., Indian Territory, apparently the 1890 census, but done later, listing Lucinda (Burks) #781 and her first daughter, Minnie #782 (listed incorrectly as Myrtle, later corrected). She was living in the household of her aunt Sarah Folsom #780, who raised her. We also have the Choctaw Rolls, Field No. 3933, stating that application was made for enrollment 25 Aug 1899, enrollment was complete 10 Mar 1903 for Lucinda and her first four children. These names are: Lucinda Burks, Minnie M. Burks, Willie E. Burks, Marvin F. Burks, and Odra May Burks. This document list her parents as Ben Hampton and Charlotte Hampton. In addition to having no records, we recently came upon a document done from interviews with Ben Hampton late in life, for a book, in which he went over much of his young life, and there was no mention of either Charlotte, or Lucinda. This may not be significant, however, as he also did not mention his role in the Dawes Commission, possibly because it was not something that came to be a "popular" event with the Choctaw. Charlotte and Ben were either divorced, or never married, because Lucinda was born in September, 1874, and by 1878, she married Rudolphus Gardner. They had a son born 7 Jul 1880, and on 23 Jul 1880, Charlotte died; just 16 days later, so it was probably from complications of the birth of her son. After her death, Rudolphus must have taken Lucinda to her father, Ben Hampton. This is what Lucinda told her granddaughter: She said that after her mother died, her father took her to her Aunt Sarah Folsom's home, and told Sarah he could no longer care for Lucinda. He asked Sarah, who was unmarried, to take her to raise. We are assuming this was in 1880, when Lucinda was six years old. Sarah agreed, and Lucinda was raised by her Aunt. There appears to be friction between this Folsom family and either Ben Hampton, or the Hampton family, but whatever the cause of this, Lucinda did not see her father until he came to visit her when she was 18 years old. She was defiant, and disappointed that he had not come to see her in all the intervening years. She turned him away, and he never came to see her again. In her later years, Lucinda talked to one of her daughters, asking her to go to Lucinda's father, and ask him if he would like to see her. However, before this could be done, Ben Hampton broke his leg and had to be taken to Oklahoma City to the hospital there. He was never able to return home, and died there, so they were never reunited. Lineage: The Eighth Generation: 54. v. Charlotte8
